Equipment

The Schatz Center was initiated with the purchase of new equipment to establish a high-throughput genetic analysis facility in the research laboratory of the principal investigator (John Carlson) in the Biotechnology Institute at Penn State. The Schatz Center features the following major equipment items for genomics, genetic engineering, and population genetics research:

  • ABI 3700 Automated DNA Analyzer
  • Visible Genetics OpenGene 96-Capillary Automated DNA Sequencer
  • Genetic data information management system
  • ABI Genescan, Genotyper, and other sequence analysis software
  • Packard Multiprobe II liquid handling robot for
    • DNA sequencing template preparation
    • Mixing of sequencing and PCR reactions
  • Thermal cyclers
    • 96- and 384-well block cyclers
    • gradient cycler
    • in situ cycler
  • DNA extraction machines
    • Bio101 Fast Prep machine
    • McConnell Research Miniprep machine
  • Fluorescence microscopy suite for FISH experiments, GFP expression studies, and image analysis
    • Axioplan2 research microscope
    • Axiovert inverted microscope
    • Zeiss stereo zoom microscopes
    • digital “Spot II” 35 mm CCD cameras
  • Laminar flow hoods
  • Sterile work benches for tissue culture and PCR
  • Fluorescence plate reader for 384 well plates
  • Controlled environment incubators and water baths
  • -80°C, -20°C freezers and 4°C refrigerators for sample storage
  • Fully equipped radio-isotope lab
  • Mac & PC workstations
    • Data management
    • Sequence analysis
  • Other standard equipment for molecular biology

The Schatz Center is well equiped for high-throughput data acquisition for research in:

      • Genomics
      • Conservation Genetics
      • Genetic Engineering
      • Molecular Cytogenetics
