Visiting Scholars Program

Title: The Schatz Visiting Scholars Program at Pennsylvania State University
Location: University Park, PA
Deadline: Offered annually starting July 1, 2003

Description:
A visiting scholars program has recently been established in The Louis W. Schatz Center for Tree Molecular Genetics in the School of Forest Resources at The Pennsylvania State University. The purpose of the Schatz Visiting Scholars Program is to bring guests to the Schatz Center every year to learn techniques, to perform research, and to develop collaborative long-term research programs in the general area of tree molecular genetics. Examples of eligible Schatz Visiting Scholars will include University faculty on sabbatical leaves, established industry or government scientists seeking advanced training, and Ph.D. candidates enrolled outside of the School of Forest Resources who wish to incorporate a molecular genetics component in their thesis, among others. Schatz Visiting Scholars will be expected to develop a research program to continue after they return to their home institutions and to apply for research award programs (to Fulbright, NSF, or similar programs) while in residence at the Schatz Center. Financial support will be available for salary supplementation, research expenses, education and travel expenses, graduate assistantships, and support services, to the extent determined by annual endowment earnings.

The Schatz Center, under the direction of Dr. John E. Carlson, is located in the Biotechnology Institute at Penn State’s University Park campus. The Schatz Center includes several other faculty members in the School of Forest Resources and associate members from other departments at Penn State. The Schatz Center is equipped for high-throughput DNA sequencing and genotyping, plant tissue culture, and molecular cytogenetics. Major research projects in the Schatz Center currently include The Floral Genome Project and The BAC Resources for Plant Biology Project.

To apply or to request further information please contact John Carlson. Applications should include a statement of research interests and experience and a current CV, preferably as e-mail attachments or by FAX: 814-865-3725.
